Some might argue that since my eleven-year-old child is capable of setting an alarm to wake up for school, she should. I would not argue with them. I would ensure she knows how to set and use an alarm clock, and then I would continue waking her up until she says she’d like to use her alarm clock.  I had to learn how to gently wake him. I make sure he has coffee and the house is relatively quiet (he’s prone to migraines if there’s a lot of loud noise when he wakes up). The gentleness with him has spread to me. I have learned to give myself a few minutes of quiet before I face the day. When my children have something they want to tell the coach, the waiter, or the sales clerk, I first let them practice what they want to say and then they are encouraged to speak for themselves. I will never forget when we were sitting at my child’s fifth-grade parent/teacher conference and the teacher asked if we had any concerns. My dad’s listening face saved me time after time. This is very true. I read about a therapist who asked a predator what is the single most important piece of advice he could give to parents to keep their children safe. His reply was to listen to your children. He targeted kids who needed somebody to listen and understand them as a way of gaining their trust and ultimately gaining control over them.  I will say that my mother was fantastic about giving me her time and attention when she could which was often. She was also slow to judge and quick to offer grace and love, and always willing to listen somehow she managed to strike that perfect balance between friend and parent. As a result, even in my high school years, she became a close friend and that has continued into my adult years I hope I can one day be half the mom she was with me.
