Thank you for your beautiful words. Two weeks ago, I walked into a drug store to get a few items. I’d just left my sick cat at the vet, and there was a good chance I might lose him. On Sunday night, as my family and I each took turns piling fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream on slabs of coconut pound cake, I remembered. When I was five, my parents took my sister and me to the home of family friends. They did not have children, so I felt it was important to be an extra grown-up and polite. For dessert, the couple had made strawberry shortcake. I remember how they let me assemble it myself and didn’t say anything when I piled the strawberries and whipped cream extra high. It also reminded me of something. I have a couple of friends who are going through difficult things. We don’t often get a chance to focus on each other in person.
